The aim of the Ideathon is to create an innovative business model for Timberland Kidswear, taking into consideration the unique nature of this segment. The ideas developed during the competition will shape the future of Timberland Kidswear.

Learn in a real-life context

During the competition organized by Fashion Technology Accelerator for Timberland, you will have the unique opportunity to practice your business and problem-solving skills in a real-life setting. You will be supported by experienced mentors from Timberland.

Win great prizes

You will be working together in teams of five, formed by the organizers of the event. The winning team will receive a gift card, while the student with the overall best performance will be awarded a 12-month internship at Timberland’s offices in Switzerland.

What is the objective of the Ideathon?

The objective of this competition is to develop an innovative business model for Kidswear.

The segment of Kidswear is characterized by the presence of two actors: parents purchasing the products and children using them. This division differentiates Kidswear from other segments.

Today’s parents are represented mostly by the millennial generation (1981-1996).

This generation presents different characteristics. First, they are more conscious about the social and environmental impact of their consumer behaviors. Second, they like to feel good about their purchases and often value experiences more than material products. Most millennials are technologically savvy and generally enjoy shopping online. This generation places a high value on social proof when evaluating a product or service and appreciates personalization.

Parents decide entirely the items to purchase for the young children (0 – 5). Older children (6-13) begin to influence, and eventually make, such decisions themselves.

Those children belong to the digital native generation (Z) and are used to the Internet of Everything, social media and video entertainment. These elements influence their consumer behavior and differentiate it from their parents’.

This generational shift, both for parents and children, has created the need for new business models that cater to the changing demands and preferences of consumers. At the same time, the innovative business model has to reflect the unique nature of the Kidswear segment and adapt to the different age ranges and their characteristics. 

The Ideathon aims at finding innovative solutions to tackle the challenges of this segment successfully.

Timberland offers Kidswear including both apparel and footwear for Infants (0-1 years), Toddlers (1-5 years), Youth (5-9 years) and Juniors (9-13 years). 

How can I apply?

You can apply if you are:

  • A final-year student of a Master’s program within business, management engineering or related fields
  • Motivated to find innovative solutions
  • Interested in a 12-month internship with Timberland
  • Available for the dates of the three workshops and the Ideathon – see dates below
  • Fluent in English, written and spoken

You will hear back from us about your application by March 24, 2022. Selected students will then receive further information about the next steps.

Frequently asked questions

Will the Ideathon take place as a physical event?

Yes, the Ideathon will be held in person in Milan, Italy at Cascina Cuccagna.

Do I have to know how to code or use any specific software or tools?

No, you are not required to have a tech background or experience with any programs. Everything you need to know to compete successfully will be covered during the workshops prior to the Ideathon.

Do I have to pay any fees in order to participate in the event?

No, the application for and participation in the event are completely free. Plus, Timberland will cover transportation costs to Milan for all selected students!

Do I have to select my team for the Ideathon myself?

No, the teams will be assigned by us, so you only have to apply yourself and you’re done! No need to know any other participants either, as everything will be organized by us.

What can I expect from the workshops before the Ideathon?

There will be three workshops, which will give you the opportunity to learn more about the areas most important to a successful participation in the Ideathon. These workshops will take place virtually. Further information will be shared with the selected students closer to date.
